My journey into the world of therapy began unexpectedly in 1991 when I took short massage courses while recovering from a back injury and unable to work on my property. I immediately loved it and was encouraged by the intructors to take it further. After much practice on friends and some part time work I decided this was what I wanted to do.
In 1992 I began two years of training in Traditional Chinese Therapy at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Study Centre in Sydney where I undertook advanced training in Acupressure, Gua Sha and Cupping based on an old style of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The training over two years consisted of periods of in-house intensive training in Sydney, followed by periods of independent practice with access to instructors for instruction and advice on individual cases as required.
Since then, I have worked in Byron Bay, Yeppoon and Byfield, and trained in a number of therapies, including Thai Massage (Diploma in Thailand), Dorn Method, Hot Stones, Emmett Technique and more - most of which I rarely, if ever use as for various reasons they did not meet expectations or did not fit in well as my practice evolved over time.
In recent years I have focused more on my long held interest in the ways stress and autonomic nervous system dysfunction can adversely affect our ability to heal - and developing ways to address these issues to activate and strengthen our amazing inbuilt capacity to self regulate, repair and thrive. In alignment with the phrase 'prevention is better than cure', attributed to Dutch philosopher Desiderius Erasmus, I have also developed maintenance treatment protocols to suit each person's needs and preferences.
I now mostly use Physiokey Neuroadaptive Therapy, low level laser and LED light treatment, Cupping and MPS (microcurrent acupuncture point stimulation) as I have found them to be safe and effective, and work well together. The way they work also aligns with my approach to treatment that places emphasis on activating and strengthening our amazing natural abity to heal and self regulate.
Often combined with one or more of the other treatments mentioned above, the Physiokey now plays a pivotal role in most treatments I provide. Sometimes only one modality is used, sometimes two or more are used in a single treatment.
In keeping with the wholistic approach taken at Recharge Remedial Therapy, while direct attention is paid to a particular problem, such as a painful back or knee etc., particular attention is also directed toward enhancing each person's natural inbuilt capacity to self regulate and repair. One of the most important and useful ways of doing this is to help reduce the sympathetic (fight or flight) activity in the autonomic nervous system and encourage a shift toward parasympathetic (rest and repair) activity. In effect, shifting more of the body's energy and resources toward self repair and regulation.
